Why Jesus Never Had Ulcers!
Acts 1:6-11

Sermon-in-a-Sentence:  We cannot avoid difficulties in life, but we can learn to conquer the anxiety they create.

QUESTION:  Have you ever faced a difficult or stressful situation?  Have you ever "worried?"  All of us face stress on a daily basis, but Randy Walters faced a particularly difficult situation at the bank this past week in Allentown, PA.

For most people—probably all people—the greatest worry in life is death. Randy Walters was faced with a completely different situation—one was of the most stressful situations in his life resulted from “not being dead.” Randy Walters was faced with the difficult and stressful task of "proving to the bank and the Social Security Office that he was indeed, “Not Dead.”  He had gone into the bank to open a checking account when he received some bad news from the clerk:  He was dead!  The teller told him she checked his social security number and found that he was indeed deceased.  Randy said, "I told her I was alive and standing right in front of her."  Sorry. . . .the computer says your dead!

Next step - convincing the Social Security Office he was alive.  They said, "according to our records you died in March and you are going to stay that way until you contact the local office."  Is that a reason to worry or what!

Randy Walter produced the evidence necessary to prove he was alive.  Then he opened the checking account.

How about you?  How would you face being told you were dead?  I suspect far too many of us would stomp and fuss and ask to see the manager, which would do little good because when Social Security says your dead. . . .your dead!

Randy Walters persevered, pressed ahead, and overcame a very worrisome and stressful situation because he put his trust and belief in an "alternative interpretation" of the facts.  He knew he was not dead whether anyone else did or not.  He had "faith" that what he believed would ultimately offer a truer, more real explanation.  In other words, his "belief" gave him assurance.

When faced with difficult, uncertain situations we must have some over-riding principle upon which we can rely.  We must develop a powerful principle for life that will carry us through difficult times.  We must find something to put our trust in.  Jesus teaches us in our passage, today just such a principle.

READ ALONG WITH ME IN ACTS ACTS 1:6-11

6 So when they met together, they asked him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" 7 He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight.  10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him.

America has been called the "Aspirin Capital of the World".  A recent survey reported that we "consume 97% of the world's aspirin supply!  It appears that the American Dream has become and alarming nightmare for many people!  People are

"stressed-out, burn-out, and about to blow up!"  Many people have completely lost the ability to cope with life.  Crime, drugs, domestic violence, divorce, suicide, and on and on and on, the list of stress and worry factors go.  Our modern society bends beneath the awful load created by a lack of optimism about the future brought on by a society that is "full steam ahead without a rudder" or any moral bearing.

The situation says we are "dead" and we don't know what to do about it!  What About You and Me?

Are you worried about the future?  Are you feeling the weight and burden of life in the near 21st Century?  Maybe you are coping better than most. . . .but are you courageously enjoying life.  GOD DID NOT CREATE US TO COPE, BUT TO CONQUER (REPEAT)!  GOD DID NOT DETINE US FOR MISERY BUT DESIGNED US FOR MARVELOUS PROPERITY.  Jesus said,

"I came to give you life, filled up to the brim life!"  Jn 10:10

We were patterned for prosperity, designed for delight, and manufactured with marvelous potential.  Here the Bible as it shouts loud and clear:

GOD IS ON YOUR SIDE--HE BELIEVES IN YOU!

Jesus knew the secrets to victory.  Today we will examine the very last words Jesus spoke to his disciples before he "sailed home to glory."  Jesus never had ulcers because:

1.  He Never Worried About What He Could Not Change  (v 7)

Most Christians WORRY TOO MUCH, AND WORK TOO LITTLE! "It's not for you to know" or we could say, "don't sweat what you don't know".  Suppose you did figure out exactly when and how the end would come.  What could you do about it?  Instead of reducing your stress, you would probably worry yourself to death trying to figure out a way to avoid it, change it, or cheat it!

Someone tells about a woman who for many years couldn’t sleep at night because she worried that her home would be burglarized. One night her husband heard a noise in the house, so he went downstairs to investigate. When he got there, he found a burglar. The husband said to the burglar, "Come upstairs and meet my wife. She has been waiting 10 years to meet you." A real burglar can steal from you once; worry can steal from you night after night, for many years. Worry not only steals our sleep, but worry also steals our health and our abilities to cope with life productively.

I like what one man said to his friend. . . ."I will give $1000 a year to anyone who will do my worrying for me."  The money hungry friend quickly snapped back, "I'll do it.  I'll start right now doing your worrying for you. Now where's the $1000 bucks?"  The man replied, "That's your first worry!"

Friend, your shoulders are not big enough to take on the burdens of the world.  Jesus said, "My yoke is EASY and my burden is LIGHT!"  DID YOU HEAR THAT MY STESSED-OUT BAPTIST FRIENDS?  God did not save us to do His worrying for us.  He did not call us to be busy, but to be a blessing.  (Listen, Don't Miss This).  We can't be a blessing to others if we are burnt out and broken down by the pressures of church.  [REPEAT]  How could Jesus say my "burden is easy, my yoke is light?"  Aren't we as Christians called to die for the world?"  LISTEN:  NO WE ARE NOT CALLED TO DIE FOR THE WORLD - JESUS ALREADY DID!

JESUS BORE THE PAIN. . . .SO WE COULD SHARE THE PROMISE!  Probably the most stress-beating, burden busting words Jesus ever spoke were from the cross when he said, Teletelestai :  "IT IS FINISHED!"

Here are two important lessons we must learn about the situation of sin in our world:  a difficult, disastrous disease which we can do nothing about:

#1:  God has not called us to

ELIMINATE SIN, but to ENLIGHTEN SINNERS.
#2:  God does not expect us to

ERADICATE EVIL, only ALLEVIATE PAIN

We can—and we should—participate in the political process to help bring about a more just and merciful society, but in reality, this is only a “stop-gap” effort that offers little meaningful change.  Our society is on a collision course with destruction and all the political maneuvering in the world is not going to stop it.

God wants us to make the best of a bad situation until He comes.

Contrary to what the “positive thinkers” and what one preacher called “The Joy Boys” (referring to prosperity preachers) are saying: the world is going to continue to get worse no matter what you and I, or anybody else does.  As I said, our primary mission is to Enlighten Sinners and Alleviate Pain.  Political involvement is a small part.

Some people accuse those who believe in the premillennial, pre-tribulational plan for the future as “ignoring this world and all its problems.  We are often called “reactionary” or “escapists.”  Nothing could be further from the truth.  Those of us who truly believe in the world will get worse before the coming of Christ are busy preaching and teaching and warning so that people can escape the wrath to come.  We are not REACTIVE – TRUE BELIEVERS ARE PROACTIVE.

In verse 6 Jesus describes two different aspects of the future by

using two synonyms for “time.”  Jesus used the words, “chronos” and “kairos” to describe the future.  Chronos refers to the ticks of the clock – the simple passing of time.  This describes so many people.  They are simply passing time, and life is passing by.  The other word Jesus uses was kairos.  The word has a slightly different meaning when describing “time.”  In Classical Greek prior to the N.T. period this word referred to a “strategic, decisive point in time.”  Kairos translates better as “an opportunity” as in Eph. 5:16 which says

“Make the most of every opportunity (kairon) because the days are evil.” We are living in days of great opportunity – the darker our world, the more effective and needed is our light.  We need to get busy!

In LK 19:13, which we examined last week, Jesus said, "Occupy til I come!"

The word He used was PRAGMATUEMAI, which means "get busy, invest, conduct business."  We get the English word, "pragmatic."  Don't worry about what you can't change -- get busy changing what you can!  "It's not for us to know all that God’s plan entails—our duty is to “work the plan." (7,8).

He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by His own authority…. 8 be My witnesses.”

Witnessing is a great remedy for worrying!

Aren't You Glad, You Don't Have To Have ALL THE ANSWERS?

We need to take a lesson from the little boy, Jimmie.  A mother was frustrated with her eight years old son.  He was always getting into something.  All day long as the mother tried to get the chores done, Jimmie would run in-and-out of the house for one reason or another.  Each time the screen door would shut with a loud "BANG!"  After what seemed like the 1000th time the mother screamed in frustration, "Jimmie, how do you expect to get into heaven acting like that?"

WEEELLLLLL that's a big question for a little boy.  Certainly that would give Jimmie plenty to worry about in life.  That may have cause a stress trauma so great he would have to see a counselor to "reprogram."  Oh, but little children have a way around worry. . . .little Jimmie thought for a moment (his mother I'm sure never expected an answer).  Then Jimmie blurted out, "Well, No Problem!  I'll just run in and out, in and out, in and out and keep slamming God's door until he says, "For heaven's sake, Jimmie, either come in or stay out!"  The first secret to beating stress is:  DON'T WORRY ABOUT WHAT YOU CAN'T CHANGE!  Jesus, happily and merrily busied Himself with the will of God, leaving Himself completely in His Father's hands.  He didn't sweat the details, he did the deed!

Sure. . . .that's a great idea!  But, where can the average Joe (or Jane) find the POWER to live a life like Jesus?  Is the same power that helped Jesus endure the cross available to us today?  Can we find the same power over difficulty that Jesus did?  The answer is a resounding YES!  Jesus never had ulcers because:

2.  He Never Wondered Where His Help Would Come From (v 8)

"But you will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit has come on you.

“Power” is exactly what the disciples were looking for – exceptnot in the sense that Jesus was speaking.  The disciples were looking for the kind of power that Rome now had and Israel once had – political power.

Look back at their question in verse 6:

"Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?"

The word the disciples used for restore was a double-compound word which meant, “to restore to a former state,” that state being when the King of Israel held absolute political power.  But that was not – and is not – the power that Jesus offers Christians indwelt by the Holy Spirit.  The power Jesus is speaking about FAR TRANSCENDS mere political influence and control.  Jesus was talking about “Spirit power” that could, and did raise the dead.  This is the power Jesus displayed in the Passion.  Totally, absolute trust in the power of Almighty God.  We’re talking: GRAVE-BUSTING POWER!

Jesus lived, breathed, died, and rose again trusting in the power of God.  LISTEN TO THIS FANTASTIC STATEMENT OF FAITH:

"And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies THROUGH HIS SPIRIT, who lives in you"  (Romans 8:11, repeat)

Jesus  explains the consequence of what He  meant when he said, "You will receive "dynamite" when the Holy Spirit comes on you!"

The word translated “power” refers to the ability to overcome challenges, or the power to make significant, even miraculous change.  The word “dunamis” would later come to be transliterated into English as the word, “dynamite.”  Just as dynamite has great explosive power in the natural world to remove challenges—like a mountain—so too, a spirit-filled believer has great explosive power to overcome mountain-sized challenges.

The disciples wanted power – and Jesus did not disappoint them.

Real power is not political influence, but a supernatural indwelling.

Even death is not strong enough to keep the Christian.  WOW!  God wants us to pack the punch of dynamite and so often we cannot even must the pitiful snap of a 10 cent firecracker!

Jesus never WAIVERED because Jesus never WONDERED where His help was coming from.  How many times in difficult days do you suppose Jesus reflected on the words in Psalm 121:

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills--where does my help come from?  My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth!"  (v 1) With So Much Hurt, Despair, and Need In The World How Can We As Christians Not Despair and Worry?

The answer is POWER!  THE MOUNTAIN MOVING "DYNAMITE" POWER OF ALMIGHTY GOD THROUGH HIS HOLY SPIRIT!

Did you ever think to yourself. . . ."How can I change anything?  I'm just one person, rather ordinary at that.  What power do I have to change anything?

IN OREGON ABOUT 7700 YEARS AGO THERE WAS A MOUNTAIN.  In fact, it was the largest mountain in N. Am.  It was called, "Mt. Mazama."  It's twin peaks danced in the clouds as it spiraled out of sight into the heavens.  But, if you go to Mt. Mazama today, and I've been there,  you don't see Mountain Peaks jutting up thousands of feet into the sky.  YOU SEE ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CRYSTAL-CLEAR LAKES IN THE WORLD.  At 1900 feet deep "Crystal Lake" is the 7th deepest lake in the world.  This lake holds over 4.6 trillion gallons of water.  But, where is Mt. Mazama?  Mt. Mazama was a volcano and in one horrific display of awesome power, this great Mt. exploded and formed Crater Lake.  It erupted with the force of 20,000 bombs like the one dropped on Hiroshima.  FRIEND. . . .THAT'S POWER!  BUT THE "DYNAMITE" POWER OF GOD'S SPIRIT IS FAR GREATER STILL!!!

Jesus Never Worried About What He Could Not Change. Jesus Never Wondered Where He Would Find The Power To do God’s Will, and Jesus never had ulcers because

3.  He Never Wasted Time Wishing Things Were Different (v 11)

"Why Are You Standing Here With Your Heads In The Clouds?"

There's much we cannot change.  There's some we can change. . . .

We CAN continually involve ourselves in ministry to outsiders.... We CAN involve ourselves in local, state, and national politics....We CAN contribute cheerfully to the work of missions locally and worldwide....We CAN participate merrily and heartily in our local church....We CAN pray without ceasing.  There is MUCH WE CAN DO!

Too Many Christians Are Angels....Always Up In The Air Harping About Something.

Anyone Can Curse The Darkness---For God's Sake, Someone Light A Candle!

Dreaming About Ministry Is Not Good Enough!

I recall a little boy named, Billy.  Billy was not a "scholastic sort of guy."  He had little interest in school.  During class he would drift off to sleep and dream of far away places.  Many times the teacher would abruplty bring Billy back into session.  It happened one day during "geography" class.  Billy drifted off to dreamland.  The teacher spied him and shouted, "Billy, I'm ashamed of you!  Sleeping during geography class. What do you have to say for yourself?"  In defense Billy answered,  "Well, I was sleeping Ma'am, but I was dreaming about geography!"

Too Many Christians Are Asleep At The Wheel Dreaming About Ministry.

WE NEED TO GET OUR HEADS OUT OF THE CLOUD, AND OUR HANDS ON THE PLOW!

Or, as one brother said a few years ago – we have the sand, we havethe gravel, we have the water – if we want to build a great church we need to start making concrete!

A few years ago a survey was taken (shortly after the success of Desert Storm).  According to the survey the most honored and respected man in America was Gen. Colin Powell, the Chairman of the Armed Forces Chiefs of Staff.  Success did not drop into Powell's lap.  As a yound man he set out to make some-thing of himself.  He didn't dream about success, he worked at it.

He tells the story of three "ditch diggers."  One digger leaned on his shovel all day and dreamed about owning the company.  A second digger complained about the work wished things were different.  The third digger kept on digging.

Years passed.  The first digger was still leaning on the shovel dreaming about owning the company.  The second digger faked and injury and retired on a small pension.  The third digger, who kept on digging now owned the company.

You won't beat the stress of life "wasting time wishing things were different."

You've got to get out of the clouds and get into the ministry.

Gen. Powell held the highest military position in the most powerful nation on earth.  He began his climb up the ladder of success "mopping floors in a bottling factory."  He said, "I set out to be the best mop wielder in the company."

"FAITH THAT IS IN THE CLOUDS WON'T HELP MUCH WHEN YOUR IN THE TRENCHES!"

ST. FRANCIS HAS A WONDERFUL PRAYER:

GOD GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO

ACCEPT WHAT I CANNOT CHANGE.

COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN,

AND WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE.

Security: A Vault, A Ring, and A Boat
1Peter 13-5 (Eph. 1:13; Mark 4:35-5:1)

SIS: Once saved-Always Saved is an undeniable truth in the Bible teaching that once a person is truly saved, they can never again be lost.

Fear is a powerful motivator.  For example, very few people drive the speed limit our of a sense of duty or high regard for law and order.  Most of us drive the speed limit because we fear getting pulled over by the police and given a ticket.

Fear is a powerful motivator.  On a sight-seeing trip on Florida’s west coast, another couple were visiting an old mansion. In the exquisitely furnished master bedroom, we were surprised to see signs on the bedspread and curtains reading: "WASH HANDS IMMEDIATELY AFTER TOUCHING." Afterwards the wife noted: “ We admired the furnishings from a safe distance, but our curiosity was aroused, so, on leaving, I decided to ask the guard if the fabric had been treated with some harmful preserving chemical.”  The guide just grinned: "Oh, no, ma’am,” he said. "There’s nothing on ’em. We just never did have much luck with the ’Do not touch’ signs." (copied)

I think you will agree that fear is indeed a powerful motivator.  But there is one thing a devoted follower of Christ should never fear. That is, losing one’s salvation for any reason, including personal sin after we are saved.

This is the essence of the Bible’s doctrine of the “security of the believer.”  This doctrine is also referred to as the doctrine of “the perseverance of the saints.”  That which God elects to salvation, He also preserves or protects for all eternity.  This doctrine has often been over-simplified by the phrase, “once saved, always saved.”  While that phrase is technically correct, it does not fully express everything that pertains to the security of the believer.

In regard to this doctrine, we define a believer as someone who has been truly saved as evidenced by being “sealed, or filled, with the Holy Spirit of promise.  There is no security for someone who merely has an intellectual understanding of the Bible and God, or even a deeply emotional religious experience at some time in one’s life.  Salvation does involve a degree of intellectual understanding, and a salvation experience can be very emotional, more so for some than for others.  But, a real believer has resolutely and sincerely turned away from his or her sins (repented) and acknowledged that Jesus Christ is the Lord, the Son of God, the Only Savior (confessed).  A real believer has been “transformed” as evidenced by the Spirit of God taking absolute and total control of one’s life (indwelling, sealing).

So, someone who has a religious experience but without any true repentance has no foundation for feeling eternally secure.  These people will show no true evidence of any life-transforming transaction involving the Spirit of God.  From a human perspective, we have no way to know with any certainty who is a “real” believer and who is a “pretender.”  There are often, however, clues in regard to how a person lives their lives day after day, year after year.

In the New Testament there are at least three very important metaphors or symbols to help us see the durability of true salvation:  a Vault, a Ring, and a Boat.  1Peter 1:3-5 will introduce us to the idea of eternal security.  (READ 1Peter 1:3-5)

1.  A Vault (1Peter 1:3-5)

What we just read are some of the most descriptive and picturesque teachings in the Bible regarding our salvation.

The language used by Paul to describe the “security of the believer” in this passage is some of the most colorful and rich in the entire New Testament.  One word in particular stands out as especially descriptive in its use of the perfect tense and participial form.  Translated as “kept” in the HCSB, and “reserved” in the KJV (τετηρημένην, tetērēmenēn) the original Greek meant, “watch carefully, guard; keep, hold in reserve, preserve; observe, obey, pay attention to.”  The tense of the word is the Greek perfect which referred to a past action with results that continue forever.  Further, Paul uses the participial form which refers to “on-going action.”  The emphasis is that our salvation is absolutely impossible to lose in any way for any reason.  Paul further strengthens this idea in verse five with the word, “protected” (HCSB) or “guarded” (ESV).  Once a person is truly saved that person can NEVER be lost.  We call this the doctrine of the “security of the believer.”

In verses 3-5 Peter outlines our salvation.  He lays the foundation for his description of our salvation by calling it 1) a new birth;  2) a living hope; and 3) an inheritance.  Each of these word pictures paints a picture of permanence and durability—or, as we are focusing on today, security.  A person who is “born,” cannot be unborn.  A hope that is “living” is constantly being renewed.  Paul expounds even further on the idea of an inheritance.

An inheritance describes a matter of permanent transfer.  Keep in mind that as believers we are “adopted sons and daughters” of God through Christ.  Ephesians 1:5 tells us:
In love  He predestined us to be adopted through Jesus Christ for Himself, according to His favor and will.

Adoption was a very specific and well-defined transaction in the Roman world, especially in regard to laws of inheritance.  Adoption in the Roman world, especially among the richer ruling class, was quite common.  The laws for this legal change of status for an individual were very involved.  Disinheriting a child was looked upon with great disfavor, especially if the child were adopted.  In fact, studies indicate it was not possible to disinherit an adopted child as one could a natural child.

The idea of our salvation as an inheritance is to indicate
a permanent change in status into a son or daughter of God.

To further establish the permanence of this transaction, Peter describes our adoption as sons or daughters of God, and therefore our promise of an inheritance, in three ways.

First, our salvation is “durable” and beyond any decay or loss.  It cannot be diminished in any way by any thing.  Peter uses three words to describe the durability of our salvation in verse 4.  He takes three common adjectives and adds an “a” or alpha to the beginning which makes the adjective a negative.  Our salvation is “not perishable, not corruptible, and not fading.”  This trinity of “nots” is given to demonstrate the absolute durability of our salvation.

Second, our salvation is “kept.”  (v4).  Peter will piggy-back off of this idea in verse 5.  The idea of being “kept”demonstrates the absolute security of our salvation by pointing out “where” our salvation is kept—“in heaven.”  In addition Peter uses a very strong form of the word meaning, “to watch over in order to protect,” by making it a participle which demonstrates on going action.  Beyond that, Peter uses a “perfect tense particple” which not only means the protection is on-going, but that it “never ends.”  That is the significance of the Greek perfect tense.

If all this were not enough, Peter adds even more to this grand painting of salvation using words as the artistic medium.  Third, Peter says that our inheritance of salvation which is durable and being watched over in heaven, is “in a vault being guarded by God, Himself.”  Verse 5 explains,

You are being protected by God’s power (HCSB), or as the ESV translates it, “by God’s power [You] are being guarded.”

The word translated “protected” or “guarded” was often used to describe somebody in custody, that is locked up in a jail, or vault.  This is very important in showing the eternal security of a person who is saved.  Some groups, like Assemblies of God, do not hold to a doctrine of the eternal security of the believer.  There official position states that “while it is not possible to lose one’s salvation, a person can walk away from salvation” by choosing to live a sinful life after being saved.

That interpretation is not possible in light of 1Peter 1:5.  A person that is “locked up in custody” is not free to walk away.

According to verses 4-5, our salvation is kept in a vault and guarded by God, Himself.  This is the highest order of security in the universe.  Because I do not have to “fear” losing my salvation, or having God take it away, or even walking away from it of my own free will, I can focus on boldly and courageously serving God no matter what opposition or challenge I might face.

Now, write this down and refer to it often:  “once saved, serve Jesus with boldness and courage without a fear of loss in any way.”  That’s a much better way of expressing the “true,” but “theologically vague” doctrine, “once saved, always saved.”

Now, to keep anybody from arguing that 1Peter really is not describing the absolute security of the believer, let me point out two other equally powerful metaphors that show the same thing:  a Ring and a Boat.

2. A Ring (Ephesians 1:13)

13 When you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed in Him, you were also sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.  14 He is the down payment of our inheritance, for the redemption of the possession,  to the praise of His glory.

This time, it is Paul describing the process and outcome of salvation.  He uses a level of literary prose that matches the majestic words of Peter we just examined.  Instead of painting the picture of a “vault,” Paul paints a picture of salvation as a “ring.”  Before we look at the “result” of being saved, let’s look at the process as Paul outlines it.

First
, a person must hear the gospel.  By hear, I mean be exposed to the proposition of the gospel.  That could be from hearing a sermon.  It could be by reading a gospel tract.  It could be someone writing the Bridge of Life illustration on a napkin in a restaurant.  It could be by watching a gospel presentation on T.V.  It could even be in a dream, as is happening all over the Muslim world where Jesus, Himself, appears to men and women.  The key is that somehow, some way, somewhere, a person must come into contact with the gospel message.

Second, a person must believe the gospel message.  This does not mean one must simply have an intellectual understanding of the gospel—that is, that all people are sinners and only faith in Jesus Christ can save—but, one must place absolute and total trust in Jesus, turning away from one’s sins (repenting) and deciding to follow Jesus.  The Bible teaches that God promises to provide the faith we need to choose to follow Jesus.  Salvation is a matter of “grace alone,” without any contribution by the one being saved.  It is simply a response to God’s free offer of salvation—which is free because God in Christ already paid the price when Jesus died on the cross at Calvary and was raised on the third day.  After being exposed to the message of the gospel, one must surrender to the One the gospel calls the Lord and Savior.

Third, a person must be sealed with the Holy Spirit.  Here is where the “ring” comes into the picture.  Some groups talk about the filling of the Holy Spirit (sometimes called, baptism of the Holy Spirit) as something separate from salvation.  Paul’s outline here does not allow for that interpretation.  Paul’s outline is clearly, hearing, believing, and sealing.  One package with three parts.  It is the sealing of the Holy Spirit that completes the transformation, or transaction of salvation.  In another Scripture Paul clearly states, Rom. 8:9:

Rom. 8:9 You, however, are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, since  the Spirit of God lives in you.  But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,  he does not belong to Him.

There is no salvation apart from God’s Holy Spirit indwelling a person.  The Holy Spirit “seals” the salvation transaction.  Paul actually uses two words related to rings.  The first word is related to the “signet” ring, such as a king would use to seal an official document.  It was his personal ring with a raised “signet” or design which the king or official would press into wax making an official mark.  This is the meaning of the phrase, “sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.”  This is equivalent to a person signing their name to a contract.  This meant the contract was binding and irreversible.

The second reference a ring, or guarantee, comes when the Holy Spirit is described as, “the down payment of our inheritance.”  The ESV translates it the “guarantee.”  This refers to an initial sum which is given in anticipation of a pending “final” transaction, such as giving a “down-payment” on a house.  This essentially closes the deal while the necessary papers are drawn up and matters are finalized.  Normally, when one gives a “down payment,” that creates a binding agreement.

This word was puzzling to New Testament scholars for many years.  It was not clear what the noun, arrhabon (ἀῤῥαβών), referred to or how that related to the Holy Spirit’s participation in our salvation.  The word means “a pledge, a promise, a down payment.” They came to understand this meaning when the word was found in ancient trash pits on pieces of paper referring to marriage contracts.  It referred to a “token of engagement.”  Remember that in the New Testament, being engaged was as permanent as being married (remember the story of Joseph and Mary).  We still follow this practice today of giving a ring as a seal of the permanence of our wedding vows, though our engagements don’t have the same idea of permanence as in biblical times.

So, Peter talked about the security of our salvation using the metaphor of being locked in a vault in heaven guarded by God, Himself.  Paul talks about the security of our salvation as a “down-payment or an engagement ring.”  We also have the lesson of

3.  A Boat (Mark 4:35-5:1)

Let’s look at two verses from Mark and leave out what is in between for the time being.

35 On  that day, when evening had come, He told them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the sea.”  Then, verse 5:1,
……………………..
Then  they came to the other side.

Jesus did not give His all so we could have partial salvation.  When Jesus says, “our destination is the other side,” then you can rest assured you will be landing on the “other side”—NO MATTER WHAT!

I read something recently, which I’ve seen other versions of before. The statement said, “Life is what happens while you’re planning more important things.”  So often this is true.  We plan to go to the “other side” but something comes up on the way that deters us, distracts us, delays us, or even dashes our hopes of ever getting to our destination. “Life is what happens while you’re planning more important things.”

This very thing happened to the disciples on that day spoken of in Mark 4:35.  Jesus planned to go to the other side of the Sea of Galilee.  But, between verse 35 of chapter 4 and verse 1 of chapter five, “stuff happens!”  As was common, a violent storm came up on the Sea of Galilee as the cold air from the mountains hit the warmer air above the Sea.  These storms were treacherous and frightening.  The disciples you will remember, scolded Jesus who was sleeping soundly in the stern of the boat (rear of the boat for you land-lubbers).  The cried out,  Don’t You care that we’re going to die? (verse 38).

Why WASN’T Jesus concerned about the boat sinking in the middle of the lake?  He wasn’t concerned because His plan was to “go to the other side,”  not go half-way and drown!  The Lord’s confidence was in His plan.

We could weather the storms a whole lot better than we do if we would:
1)  learn God’s plan as revealed in His Word; and
2) trust God’s power that when we go with God we get all the way to the other side, everytime, regardless of what circumstances my flare up.

The main lesson of this passage is to show that Jesus has absolute sovereignty over every circumstance in our life.  The God in fair weather is still God in foul weather.  Our security is not in our skill as captains of our own boat, but our security comes from trusting God to navigate us from this life to Glory.  A great gospel song says this:

He didn’t bring us this far to leave us.

He didn’t teach us to swim to let us drown.

He didn’t build His home in us to move away.

He didn’t lift us up to let us down.

With the Lord in our boat we have absolute security knowing that we WILL reach the other side and step on the shores of glory one day!

So, Peter talked about our security a “kept in a vault and guarded by God.”  Paul talked about our security as God giving us the Holy Spirit “as a downpayment” or as an engagement ring in anticipation of that day when we, the Church, will join Him as His Bride at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb.  Jesus talked about our security as a “boat” ride to the other side that cannot be hindered by difficulty or circumstances.

Life can be quite a mess at times.  God is there.  I recall a little boy’s prayer.  He began with the standard list:  “Dear God, bless Daddy and Mommy.  Bless my sister and my brother.  And, bless my doggy and me.  Oh, and God, please take care of yourself.  If anything happens to you, we’re gonna be in a big mess!”

Life happens and it can be messy.  God wants us to be secure in our salvation, even when life is at its messiest, so that we can be bold in our presentation of the gospel to the world.  “Once saved, always saved” is absolutely true, but to a large degree misses the point.  God does not give us eternal security so that we can do as we please after we are saved but so the we can do what pleases Him.  We can take new risks and attempt exciting new ministries because we do not have to fear losing anything—most of all we do not have to fear losing our salvation.  The doctrine of eternal security has a purpose—bold, risky, giant-slaying faith that fears nothing because everything is secured by God.

Once saved, our destination is set by God and our ship is guided by His Hand of Providence.  He will steer us safely into Glory.

Security is a hot topic in this presidential election cycle—if you can get the media to cover something other than scandals and wild accusations.  In every poll we have in the U.S. the people say that the #1 issue is the “Open Border” of our country. Why is that the #1 concern? Is it because we are terrible people and don’t like immigrants? I think our Statue of Liberty and the fact we are the most charitable nation on the planet proves that is not the case.

Open Boarders are a concern because of a simple fact that all people desire “SECURITY.” It is a known fact that criminals, including vicious terrorists are flooding over our borders. Without strong borders we have no security. Without security, we cannot thrive and fully enjoy life.

A few years ago, a university did a study of school age children. In the study they observed students playing at recess in a large field without a fence. It was a huge field. The children huddled in a large group in the center of the field.

In another situation, the children were in an equally huge field, but this time it had a fence. The researchers were astonished to note that the children scattered across the entire field going right up to the edge where there was a fence.

We are free’er and more fulfilled when we feel secure. This is true of our salvation. We are free’er from sin and more fulfilled in living when we realize, “Once we are saved—Always Saved!”

God and play freely in God’s FIELD OF GRACE!

January 21, 2024                        NOTES NOT EDITED

The Big Show

Revelation 19:1-10; 1Thess. 4:13-18

SIS—The “Biggest Show” in history takes place when the Lord gathers His people to be with Him for eternity and it could happen at any moment—are you ready?

In this sermon I am using the metaphor of the “Big Show” to include the entire process from the Rapture, through the tribulation and millennium and continuing into eternity.  My emphasis is not upon the chronology of the End Times as much, but upon the unimaginable, inexplicable, incredible glory and blessing of being with Jesus forever.  Join me as we read about this “Big Show.”

 Revelation 19:6–9 (NIV84)

6 Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. 7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. 8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.” (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.) 9 Then the angel said to me, “Write: ‘Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!’ ” And he added, “These are the true words of God.”

 1.  There is an INVITATION to receive (v. 9; 1Thess. 4:13-18)

Then he  said to me,  “Write: Those invited to the marriage feast  of the Lamb are fortunate!”

I’m sure that most of you have received an invitation to attend a wedding.  These are usually very formal and exquisite communications with pretty standard language. But, there are always those that want their invitation to be, well . . . , “special.”  Take Alison and Isaac’s special invitation that read:  “At our wedding we promise you won’t ever forget the parts that you remember!” Sometimes, the job of sending out wedding invitations falls upon the Mother of the Groom.  After reading the following wedding invitation, you might want to rethink who’s in charge:  You are regretfully invited to the wedding between my perfect son, The Doctor, and some Cheap, Two-bit Tramp, whose name escapes me right now.”  I sense a bit of tension at that wedding.

Weddings involve invitations and the Wedding Supper of the Lamb is no different.  Let us read again what John records about this Special Wedding Super:

Then he  said to me,  “Write: Those invited to the marriage feast  of the Lamb are fortunate!”

This special, heavenly celebration is “By Invitation Only.”  There is something happening today in our nation that illustrates the meaning of “By Invitation Only.” That “something” is the crisis at our Southern (and less talked about, Northern) border. The border is wide open and might as well have a sign saying, “No Invitation Necessary.”

Now, I preached a while ago about the Bible’s teaching concerning the validity and morality of national borders. So, if God says borders are important and morally justified, that settles it. Entry into a country is ”By Invitation Only,” according to the Bible.

Would it shock you, then, if I said the Democrat Party policy on borders follows the Devil’s plan, not God? There are, in fact, many things in the Democrat platform and policies right out of the Devil’s handbook. The policy on borders is one. The policy on abortion is another. This is not a “political” statement—it is a statement of fact. A fact that points to a grave error in our policy, and at the same time, highlights the importance of God’s Invitation to Heaven.

As one political ad points out: Hell has open boarders—Heaven is a gated community.”

One cannot pay for a ticket.  One cannot sneak in the back way.  One cannot “come because they had friends who were invited.”  Every one must have a “PERSONAL INVITATION from the Lord, the Groom, Himself.”

Well, when does one receive that invitation?  I’ll speak to that in just a moment, but first, let me show you how someone gets on the “Guest List” for this banquet.  Turn over to Revelation 20:12.  Here we have the mention of “God’s Books,” including “The Book of Life,” which is God’s guest list for the “Wedding Supper of the Lamb.”  Revelation 20:12 (NIV84)

12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.

Now, by the time we get to Revelation 20:12, no more names are being added to that Book.  Nobody else is going to get into heaven at this time or ever again.  This Book of Life will eventually contain all the names of every person ever saved:  all the O.T. saints, all the N.T. saints before the rapture, all those saved through tribulation and all those saved during the millennium.  It is “Heaven’s Guest List” and nobody gets to heaven unless his or her name has been recorded in it.  Some get in the Book sooner.  Some get in later.  Every one God has elected to save WILL get in this Book, or on Heaven’s Guest List.

First, let me explain “how” a person gets on that List.  Romans 8:14-16 describes the only way a person gets on this List. Verse 11 is the conclusion of that process of HOW we get on the Guest List:

11 And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead  lives in you, then He who raised Christ from the dead will also bring your mortal bodies to life through  His Spirit who lives in you.

Ephesians 1:13 (NIV84) 13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,

The Book of Life records every name of every person who has ever, or will ever, turn from their sins, accept the free gift of salvation offered to all when Jesus died on the cross.  At this moment of repentance, God seals a person’s soul with the Indwelling of the Holy Spirit, and records their name in the Book of Life—the Guest List for Heaven.

Second, let me explain WHEN this Invitation to the Wedding Supper of the Lamb will be formally delivered.  Turn to 1Thess. 4:13-18:

13 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.  14 Since we believe that Jesus died and rose  again,  in the same way God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep through  Jesus.  15 For we say this to you by a revelation from the Lord:  o We who are still alive at the Lord’s coming  will certainly have no advantage over  those who have fallen asleep.  16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout,  t with the archangel’s  voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ  will rise first. 17 Then  we who are still alive will be caught up together with them in the clouds  to meet the Lord in the air and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage  one another with these words.

This describes what has become known as, the Rapture.”  Every Bible-believing Christian believes in the “rapture,” or the “Second Coming.”  True believers do NOT deny the rapture; they only disagree on “when” it takes place.  Some believe it takes place “after” the Great Tribulation.  Some believe it takes place “before” the Great Tribulation.  Some believe it takes place at some point during the Tribulation.  Others believe it takes place after the 1000 year reign of Christ on earth, or the millennium.  Some simply admit they have no idea, but are ready as if it could be any minute.  Some . . . just don’t care.

Let me show you why the “rapture” described here in Thessalonians takes place “before” the Great Tribulation, and could take place at any time.  There are some who make no distinction between the “Rapture” and the “Second Coming.”  Some scholars deny the teaching of the “Rapture” as a “Secret Coming.”  Let me dispel that myth.  The Rapture will certainly be no “secret.”  First, God has openly declared it, here in this text and other places.  Second, the removal of millions of people will not escape notice.  Without a doubt, the world will be fully aware the Church is missing.  Many scoffers who heard preaching about the Rapture will know it has happened.  Many will repent.

Now, here are five reasons why the “Rapture” will be the formal deliverance of God’s Invitation to Marriage Supper of the Lamb—before the Tribulation.  There are more evidences for a pretribulational rapture, but time permits mentioning only a few.

 1.  Christ comes “in the air,” not to the earth.  At the Second Coming Jesus sets foot on the Mount of Olives (Zech. 14:4) to inaugurate the millennium, after the tribulation, not before as in 1Thess. 4.

2.  At the Rapture, Jesus comes “for” His saints. 1Thess. 4:17 says we are “snatched away, caught up, or raptured” (harpazō).  At the Second Coming, Jesus comes “with” the saints (Rev. 19:14).  The “Rapture” precedes the tribulation (see 1Thess. 5).  The Second Coming is followed by the Millennium (see Rev. 20:1-3).

3.  The “raptured” are saved from God’s “hour of wrath” (1Thess. 5:9; Rev. 3:10) (shorter period than the “day” of the Lord, 1Thess. 5).  Those left behind feel the full force of God’s wrath.  For the Church to endure the Great Tribulation would be like Christ beating up His Bride before the Wedding Feast.

 4.  Before the Anti-Christ can be revealed a “restrainer must be removed” (2Thess. 2:6-7).  This refers to the Holy Spirit who empowers the Church by indwelling believers.  The Holy Spirit, as God is omnipotent, so this cannot refer to the Holy Spirit, but must refer to His empowering—hence, restraining—work through the Church.

5.  Here’s what I feel is the most important evidence for a “pretribulation rapture”:  it could happen at any time (imminence) without any further prophecies being fulfilled or signs being given.  The Rapture, which initiates the “Day of the Lord,” or the “Seven Years of Tribulation” (1Thess. 5:1-3) will come as a “thief in the night” (5:2).  When was the last time you received a notice from a “thief” that he would be robbing your house on a given day at a given time?  The “Rapture” could happen at any time without any further signs (see Lk. 21:11-28).  The Second Coming comes at the end of the “70th Week” of Daniel, which represents seven years of tribulation (Dan. 9:20ff).  The Church since Pentecost has always held a belief in the “imminent” (anytime) coming of the Lord (Titus 2:13).  We know that Daniel, Ezekiel, Isaiah, Mark, and especially Revelation, among others, teach that certain signs must be fulfilled before the Second Coming.  Therefore, without a rapture, prophesies and signs must be ignored, or spiritualized.

I could give you more evidence that shows the “rapture” comes before the Great Tribulation, but my main point of this sermon, is:  don’t miss the invitation.  Even if you disagree with my timing of the “Rapture” or “Great Snatching Away,” or “Blessed Hope,” or whatever else you want to call it—DON’T MISS IT!  Accept God’s invitation of grace and get your name on the Guest List for the Wedding Supper of the Lamb.  I would like to add, however, that the “Wedding Feast” in chapter 19 precedes the record of Christ’s coming in Chapter 20.  We had to get there somehow.

Following our theme of “The Big Idea,” which we know will be accompanied by “Big Challenges,” and likely some “Big Failures,” I am referring to entering heaven as the “Big Show.”  This is where God provides an eternal banquet, or party for all eternity.  Notice in 1Thess. 4:17:  “and so we will always be with the Lord.”  The Rapture gets the party started, and God’s grace keeps it going for all eternity!  There’s an “invitation to receive,” but

 2.  There is also, a CELEBRATION to enjoy

To be quite blunt and honest with you, I don’t think most church goers are excited about going to heaven—not if you judge by the enthusiasm they show for the things of God on earth.

Oh folks, human language does not have the power to even give a glimpse of the glory and bliss of heaven.  I’ve tried over the years to describe heaven, especially at funerals, but I always feel I miss the mark by a mile.  No human (save Paul, 1Cor. ***) has ever gone to heaven and returned with pictures describing its beauty.  The best I can do is tell you how a “cat” described heaven.

A cat dies and goes to heaven.  God meets him at the gate and says, 'You have been a good cat all these years. You can have anything you desire, all you have to do is ask.' Well,' said the cat, 'I lived all my life on a farm and had to sleep on hardwood floors.' 'Say no more,' says God and instantly a fluffy pillow appears.  A few days later, six mice are killed in a tragic accident and they go to heaven. God meets them at the gate with the same offer he made to the cat. 'All our life,' the mice say, 'we've had to run. Cats, dogs, women with brooms have chased us. If we had roller skates, we wouldn't have to run any more.  'God says he can take care of it and, instantly, each mouse is fitted with a beautiful pair of tiny roller skates.  A week later God checks on the cat, which is asleep on its pillow. God gently nudges him awake and asks, 'How are you doing? Are you happy here?' 'Never been happier,' says the cat, stretching and yawning. 'And those meals on wheels you've been sending over are great.'

That’s a bad joke, but a bold truth—heaven will exceed your wildest, grandest, most glorious expecations!”

What exactly will one miss if they do not believe and are not “caught up” at the rapture?  Let me first tell you what people “will not” miss who miss the rapture—they will not miss the Great Tribulation.  They will not miss the rise of the Antichrist.  They will not miss the requirement to take the mark of the beast or risk starvation.  They will not miss Global War and Global catastrophes.  They will not miss the cataclysmic changes in the cosmos like the moon turning to blood.  They will not miss the death and disaster from world-wide disease, floods, famines, pestilences of all kind.  Those who miss the “rapture” land squarely in seven years of the most calamitous and horrible years on earth!

Human language failed John as he tried to describe the “celebration we will enjoy” at the Wedding Feast.  He saw with his eyes sights his lips could not describe.  In Rev. 19, John lacked a sufficient vocabulary to describe heaven so he used the same word four times:

V1:  Hallelujah!  Salvation, glory, and power belong to our God . . .

V3:  Hallelujah!  Her smoke ascends forever and ever! (Speaking of
The Harlot (Evil in all its forms) defeated in chapters 17-18).

V4:  Then the 24 elders and the four living creatures fell down and worshiped God, seated on the throne, saying: Amen! Hallelujah!

V 6:  Hallelujah, because our Lord God, the Almighty, has begun to reign!

One Bible scholar calls this the “Hallelujah Chorus” of the Bible.  We all know the power and majesty of the Hallelujah Chorus in Handel’s Messiah.  Here’s the inspiration for that.  It is hard for us as humans to get a grip on this heavenly seen—or more correctly, let this heavenly seen get a grip on us.

Another N.T. scholar describes this “celebration” in these words:  In 18:20 the heavens and the saints are told to rejoice at God’s judgment of Babylon the Great. That call to celebration is now expanded into a series of “hallelujah” choruses . . . . Only here in the NT does the word
Ἁλληλουϊά (Hallēlouia, Hallelujah = praise Yahweh) occur, and it governs 19:1–8. Yet this section, while a single whole, functions both to conclude the major section of the destruction of Babylon the Great (19:1–5) and to introduce the section on Jesus’ return (19:6–8).  Baker Exegetical Commentary.

The point of the “Four-fold Hallelujahs” seem clear to me:  the glorious celebration of the raptured saints is to spectacular to describe by any word but “Hallelujah!”—and that spoken over and over again by saints drunken on the ecstasy of grace!

As we think of “the celebration we will enjoy” at the “Big Show,” let me go back and pick up on how Paul concludes his teaching on the rapture.  In verses 17 and 18 Paul declares:  and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage  one another with these words.

For the most part, people do not think much about heaven, until a loved one dies.  At that time, the open wounds of grief long for the soothing balm of hope.  Despair cries out for understanding.  When death pushes us down in distress, our eyes look up to heaven, the new home for our loved ones.  We do ourselves a great disservice as believers if we only think of heaven as a solution to death.  It is much, much, much more than that.  Yet, we cannot explain heaven or what it means to truly celebrate.  All we can do is “imagine.”

Dear friends, what a celebration there is going to be when we get to heaven.  Maybe it is a bit, “sacrilegious” to refer to God’s glorious heaven as the “Big Show,” or maybe not.  Whatever you call it—don’t miss it!  There’s an invitation to receive and a celebration to enjoy.

Hope to see ‘ya there.
